Complete List of James Bond Movies

After rounding up the complete list of James Bond movies, we give you some interesting tidbits here and there. Such trivia make the films memorable and truly remarkable.

* The James Bond themes are as memorable as the actors that represented the action hero in those 22 films. It was John Barry Orchestra who orchestrated the earlier themes, which was reinvented and remixed several ways through the years. The other popular tunes that surely bring back memories of Bond films include songs like Nobody Does it Better, which was used in The Spy who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only, which was used in the Bond film of the same title.

* James Bond not only invaded the books, the television, and the big screen, it also made waves in video games and comic books. Several versions of James Bond video games were introduced through the years as well as comic strips that serve as a pricey collection for Bond fans.

* James Bond has two great passions aside from solving crimes and saving the world: girls and gadgets. In every Bond film, viewers note the gadgets and the girls and talk about them endlessly as the fever dies down until another flick is on the pipeline.

"Chariots of Fire" Is Very Simply the Greatest Running Movie Ever Made

Chariots of Fire - 4 Stars (Excellent)

As a former record-setting championship runner, it is normal and natural for me to proclaim "Chariots of Fire" as simply the greatest running movie every made. What is strange is famed movie critic Roger Ebert's reaction to this film classic.

"I have no interest in running and am not a partisan in the British class system," says Ebert. "Then why should I have been so deeply moved by 'Chariots of Fire', a British film that has running and class as its subjects? Like many great films, Chariots of Fire takes its nominal subjects as occasions for much larger statements about human nature."

"Chariots of Fire" Is Very Simply the Greatest Running Movie Ever Made

Ebert is drawn to Chariots of Fire like a bee to honey. He cannot resist the powerful presentation of this true story about two men of principles and integrity that use running as a magnet to attract followers to their cause.

One is Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross), a British man to the core and a Jew whose father is an immigrant and financier from Lithuania. The other is Eric Liddell (Ian Charleson), a Scot who is the son of missionaries in China. Both have the God-given gift of speed and seek to bring home medals from the 1924 Paris Olympics.

Abrahams feels the sting of discrimination because of his Jewish heritage and runs for the glory of Britain and the acceptance that he believes will make him whole; there is no question he is worthy. Aubrey Montague (Nicholas Farrell) is his close friend and confidant.

"You, Aubrey, are my most complete man," says Abrahams. "You're brave, compassionate, kind: a content man. That is your secret, contentment. I am 24 and I've never known it. I'm forever in pursuit and I don't even know what I am chasing."

Abrahams is driven by his quest for a gold medal in the 100-meter dash. He will let nothing come between him and his goal, even the love of his life Sybil Gordon (Alice Krige). He enters Cambridge University and quickly becomes a campus standout by becoming the first person to successfully run around the Trinity Great Court from the first toll until the clock strikes 12. His competition is Lord Andrew Lindsay (Nigel Havers) who pushes him to glory.

Abrahams tells his friend Aubrey Montague that he has never been beaten in competition. When he faces Eric Liddell for the first time he loses, and his immaturity surfaces when he declares to Sybil Gordon that "If I can't win, I won't run!" Sybil replies, "If you don't run, you can't win."

Fortunately, the famous trainer Sam Mussabini (Ian Holm) is at the race and tells Abrahams he is over striding and points out that over striding is the kiss of death for a sprinter. He reluctantly agrees to coach Abrahams so he can beat Liddell in the 100 meters.

Sam Mussabini tells Abrahams that Liddell is a fast gut runner who digs deep, but reminds him that a short sprint is run on nerves, and then adds that it's tailor-made for neurotics.

Eric Liddell is more than fast, he is one of the fastest runners anywhere, a fact that is about to be demonstrated to the world in the Olympic games. Liddell is self-assured and confident and unlike, Abrahams, runs for the greater glory of God.

When his missionary sister Jennie Liddell (Cheryl Campbell) fears his focus will be lost on running, Eric replies that "I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel his pleasure."

In the Olympic games, both Abrahams and Liddell will clash with two very fast Americans, Charles Paddock-the world record holder in the 100 meters-and Jackson Scholz-a 200-meter sprinter.

When Eric Liddell learns that the preliminaries for the 100-meter dash will be run on Sunday, he refuses to compete. When confronted by the British Olympic Committee and Lord Cadogan reprimands him for his impertinence, Liddell replies that "The impertinence lies, sir, with those who seek to influence a man to deny his beliefs!"

At the 11th hour and 59th minute, Lord Andrew Lindsey intervenes with a solution: Since he has already won a bronze medal in the 200-meter race, let Liddell replace him in the 400-meter dash.

Liddell is then seen at church delivering a guest sermon and quotes the Bible prophetically from Isaiah, Chapter 40, Verse 31: "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint" (King James Version).

Chariots of Fire has an unknown cast with spectacular photography and music as well as many running scenes.

Roger Ebert keys in on the musical score, calling it "one of the most remarkable sound tracks of any film" with music by the Greek composer Vangelis. "His compositions... are as evocative, and as suited to the material, as the different but also perfectly matched scores (as) 'Zorba the Greek'."

Vangelis' use of an electronic score may have been ill-suited to a period piece like Chariots of Fire, but it worked beyond anyone's expectations, creating a new style in film scoring. He played all of the instruments, including synthesizers, acoustic piano, battery and percussion.

Against this nostalgic backdrop the movie opens with Lord Andrew Lindsey delivering the eulogy for Harold Abahams funeral:

"Let us praise famous men and our fathers that begat us. All these men were honored in their generations and were a glory in their days. We are here today to give thanks for the life of Harold Abrahams. To honor the legend. Now there are just two of us-young

Aubrey Montague and myself-who can close our eyes and remember those few young men with hope in our hearts and wings on our heels."

From this incredible opening follows the flashback and the narration that recounts the challenges and glory of Great Britain's athletes at the 1924 Olympic Games. The next scene is the athletes running along the beach to what has become known as the Chariots of Fire theme that would later be released as a single in 1982 and top the charts in the United States.

In the end, Harold Abrahams would win the 100-meter dash, and would also win a silver medal as the opening leg (runner) on the 4x100 relay team. Eric Liddell-the Flying Scotsman-would win the 400-meter dash in an Olympic record 47.6 seconds, and also picked up a bronze medal in the 200-meter dash, won by Jackson Scholz with Charles Paddock second.

Among many poignant moments in Chariots of Fire is Eric Liddell at the starting line of the 400-meter dash and Jackson Scholz, who was not competing in the race, hands him a written note of text from the Bible. The quotation was from 1st Samuel, 2nd Chapter. Verse 30, "Those who honor me I will honor." Liddell ran the 400 meters with the note in his hand and set an Olympic record.

Abrahams would marry his sweetheart and become the elder statesman of track and field in Britain. Liddell would return to China as a missionary with his physician brother Rob and ultimately be imprisoned during the Chinese-Japanese War in 1942.

Winston Churchill arranged for a prisoner exchange to get Liddell out of the camp (his family had left China before the hostilities started) but Liddell-ever faithful to the end in serving others-gave up his place to a pregnant mother. He died of a brain tumor in 1945, 5 months before the camp was liberated. Even today, 64 years later, he is honored as Scotland's greatest athlete.

If you have a shred of integrity, principles, ethics, morals, honor, sensitivity or patriotism, you will love Chariots of Fire and be moved by its message.

If you do not, I cannot do anything for you but let you know that Chariots of Fire is more than the greatest running movie ever made, it is also one of the greatest films ever made.

Chariots of Fire, released in 1981, was a British film written by Colin Welland and directed by Hugh Hudson. It would draw moviegoers everywhere by winning 4 Oscars at the Academy Awards for Best Picture (Producer David Puttman), Best Original Screenplay (Colin Welland), Best Original Music Score (Vangelis) and Best Costume Design (Milena Canonero).

Chariots of Fire was also nominated for Oscars for Best Supporting Actor (Ian Holm as Sam Mussabini), Best Director (Hugh Hudson) and Best Film Editing (Terry Rawlings). It also had 12 other wins and 15 more nominations, including Best Foreign Film at the Golden Globe Awards.

Chariots of Fire remains among my list of the Top 10 films ever made. It passes my most stringent test of asking myself after seeing a film: Am I a better person for having seen this film? The answer is yes, a thousand times yes!

Even today, 26 years after seeing Chariots of Fire for the first time, I get goose bumps whenever I see it again.

Every time I see it I pull down my Cambridge Factfinder from my library shelf and stare at the 1924 Paris Olympic results. There I see three gold medal winners-Harold Abrahams of Great Britain in the 100-Meter Dash (10.6), Eric Liddell of Great Britain in the 400-Meter Dash (an Olympic record 47.6) and Douglas Lowe of Great Britain in the 800-Meter Run (1:52.4). Lowe was not in Colin Welland's script.

I think of that glorious time when some few ran with hope in their hearts and wings on their heels.

Movie Review: "You've Been Trumped"

Rating: NR

Length: 95 minutes

Release Date: August 3, 2012 (USA)

Movie Review: "You've Been Trumped"

Directed by: Anthony Baxter

Genre: Documentary

"You've Been Trumped" is the type of documentary that succeeds because it shows the audience a different side of a public figure. This film focuses on the fight between Donald Trump and a group of people living in Scotland. Today, Trump is almost a mockery of the man he once was, thanks in part to his television show "The Apprentice." This movie shows his ruthless side; the side that made him legendary in the business world.

The documentary details a period in the mid-2000s when Trump bought a portion of land at the Menie Estate in Scotland. Trump wanted to develop the land, turning it into an expensive golf resort called Trump International Golf Links. The fact that the property sat on a protected portion of land made no difference. Trump still wanted to build there.

Director Anthony Baxter shows the land as it once looked, and viewers might find themselves wondering why Trump would want to turn that gorgeous parcel into a resort. Baxter also shows the plans that the developer made, which called for a huge hotel, hundreds of cottages and cabins for guests, private homes, and two golf courses. Trump claimed that the city should give him permission to build because it would revitalize the economy.

The early parts of the documentary are slow going, mainly because Baxter focuses on Trump and his petitions to the city. It isn't until he introduces the locals living in Balmedie that the movie really gets going. Balmedie is a small town that shares a border with Trump's development, and the locals worried about what the project would do to the native plants and wildlife.

Standing up to a titan of industry like Donald Trump is akin to standing up to a corporation like Walmart. Even though the community understood the risk of fighting for the land, they launched a protest that made the national news. From the moment Trump announced his plans, this group of people began launching protests. They tried stopping the construction trucks, appealed to the city, and launched anti-Trump campaigns. Though they failed to stop the development, Baxter shows the steps they took after construction began.

The shots of the construction trucks and vehicles descending on the land are ones that viewers will not soon forget. Baxter shows scenes of smog and pollution from those vehicles drifting over the land, nearly covering the grass with a thick coat of smoke and dust. It's no wonder that so many environmental groups joined the protest against the resort.

"You've Been Trumped" also shows the scandals associated with the project. The Aberdeenshire Council Planning Committee, which had control over the land, originally sided with the local communities. When the council voted on the project, Trump lost. The following year, the Scottish Parliament overturned the decision, giving Trump permission to build on the land. Some viewers might find the moment heartbreaking, especially when Baxter shows shots of the unspoiled land before announcing the decision.

In recent years, Trump has cultivated a new image for himself as a brash businessman who also has a heart of gold. On his television show, "The Apprentice", he frequently mentions being upset about letting hard workers go, and he even brought some of his children onto the show. "You've Been Trumped" manages to wipe away that new image of him in just 95 minutes.

Baxter goes behind the scenes, showing a side of Trump that few people outside the business world have ever seen. He treats the protestors as nothing more than common nuisances, sometimes going head-to-head with individuals in shocking ways. When he talks down to one woman in the film, some audiences might find themselves turned off by his bullying. Even as the environmental groups and locals show him exactly what could happen, he waves them away with one hand. The only thing he cares about is creating what he calls, "the world's best golf course" regardless of what it will do to the environment.

The most interesting thing about "You've Been Trumped" is that it doesn't start at the beginning. Baxter picks up the story in 2010, after Trump received approval and began construction. The audience learns about the history of the project through locals who are disgusted with Trump.

Some of the best moments in the film come when Baxter talks to a local farmer named Michael Forbes. Forbes is the representative for the group, and goes up against Trump himself. When Trump calls him a "pig" and mentions that the city will condemn his farm because it's too close to his development, not a single person in the audience will root for the developer.

"You've Been Trumped" is a stunning documentary that almost anyone will find interesting. Baxter beautifully and strongly documents the struggle of a group of underdogs going up against one of the most powerful men in the world.

Stars: 4 out of 5

Symbolism In Snow White

Snow White is actually an ancient fairy tale, which was documented by the Grimm Brothers in 1812. It has variations in other cultures, but the most well-known version today is likely to be the Disney version.

Many fairy tales seem to be a simple children's story on the surface, but there are messages, morals and symbolism contained within the story. A closer look a Snow White will reveal some messages that you may not have noticed before. Much of the symbolism is Christian based and there are several parallels to stories in the Bible. Other aspects of symbolism are tied to common story lines in traditional fairy tales.

The colors White, Red and Black:

Symbolism In Snow White

The colors presented at the beginning of the story (skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, hair as black as ebony) provide a direct indication that Snow White is a "coming of age" story. White represents innocence (birth), red represents life and passion, while black represents death. The story of Snow White starts out with Snow White being a young girl in the original versions, and a rather naive young woman in the Disney version (the white phase). She undergoes maturity through the movie (the red phase), and experiences death (in her sleep-like state, the black phase).

No mother:

The absence of the birth mother makes it possible for storytellers to introduce the role of the evil stepmother. The evil stepmother is a common element of many fairy tales: Snow White, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel. The lack of a mother at all is also common, because if a mother were present, the series of events would not unfold as they do in stories where there is no maternal influence. People have often accused Walt Disney as being a proponent of stories without mothers (it is true that many Disney movies do not have mothers) but Disney re-created classic stories where the mother being dead was already a part of the story development. This element of story telling aims to engage the readers sympathy and it does that very well.

The poison apple:

This would seem to point all the way back to the biblical reference of the apple which was offered to Eve by the serpent (evil/Satan). The evil queen offers Snow White the apple in much the same way. Snow White knows she should not be speaking to strangers, but she does it anyway and she pays for that mistake by falling under the spell.

The significance of seven:

The number seven was used many times in the Bible for signifying perfection. The book of Revelation contains numerous groups of sevens such as angels, churches, trumpets, crowns, mountains, stars, and kings. It is one of the most significant numbers in Christianity in the sense that "God created the world in seven days", or rather he created the world in six days and on the seventh he rested.

The names of the dwarfs:

Some people have thought to correlate the seven dwarfs with the seven deadly sins, but that correlation doesn't hold water. In the Grimm version of Snow White, the seven dwarfs do not have names. In Disney's version of Snow White, the dwarfs do have names but those names were chosen out of sixty or so possible names and they do not correspond to the seven deadly sins. The names of the seven dwarfs are: Dopey, Grumpy, Doc, Happy, Bashful, Sneezy and Sleepy. These names are more aptly "the seven moods of man" rather than sins.

The Seven Deadly Sins:

The Seven Deadly Sins are represented in the story of Snow White, but not in the form of the seven dwarfs.

Pride/Vanity: Clearly the vanity of the Evil Queen. The mirror is clearly a direct reference to vanity.

Lust/Extravagance: Again, the Queen as royalty is extravagant

Gluttony: The seven dwarfs eating (maybe a stretch). Or in the original tale, the Queen actually eats the heart of Snow White.

Greed: The Queen again

Sloth: Originally meant sadness, melancholy, apathy, depression, and joylessness which would distract from attention to god. This applies to the dwarfs after Snow White dies and sloth in the form of sloppiness certainly applies to the seven dwarfs in their manner of housekeeping.

Wrath: The wrath of the seven dwarfs upon the witch after they discover Snow White dead.

Envy: The Queen (again)

The seven deadly sins have opposites in the seven holy virtues: Humility, Chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, patiences, kindness. All of these are characteristics of Snow White.

Resurrection:

Snow White "dies" and comes back to life. This certainly parallels the death and resurrection of Jesus from the Bible.

The hand washing:

The part of the story where Snow White demands that the dwarfs wash could be related to the cleansing of baptism. After the dwarfs have washed, they become people that seem to have a new purpose in life, except for Grumpy who protests the most. Grumpy does undergo a transformation throughout the movie though, from a skeptical dwarf into one that is very devoted to Snow White.

The Work Ethic:

Snow White cleans the little house without prompting and cooks without being asked. The seven dwarfs also are hard at work in the mines (Hey Ho...).

These are a few of the symbols that are the most visible in the story of Snow White, and there are probably some more!
